SS SAMLAND heading for France in 1918

In 1918, Satsuma was placed in commission with the U.S. Navy in New York as an animal transport vessel. She made only one round-trip voyage under the command of Lt. Commander George A. Saunders, disembarking at St. Nazaire, France, with 315 horses on board. All the horses survived the trip under the care of Transport Veterinarian 2nd Lt. Albert R Mahan.
