1917 and 1945: The Refugee Sea Cats of Chelsea Piers » Sailor with cat, 1940
Sailors and cats have a special relationship that dates back thousands of years. It was common for crews to adopt cats from the foreign lands they visited to serve as souvenirs as well as reminders of their pets at home. Here, a sailor from the HMS Exeter of the Royal Navy holds Pincher, the ship’s cat and mascot. Photograph by Harold Tomlin, Daily Herald (London), February 15, 1940.
