In 1896, the old Grace Chapel, a wooden structure built in 1875, was purchased by “Big” Tim Sullivan of Tammany Hall and converted into a music hall called Volks Garden. It was renamed Dewey Theater in 1897 and torn down in 1926 to make way for Fox’s new music palace.
