Tony Pastor’s Opera House at 585 Broadway (formerly Buckley’s Minstrel Hall and the Metropolitan Theatre) offered liquor- and cigar-smoke-free matinees that were promoted to ladies and families. In 1881, Pastor moved his Opera House uptown to Union Square on 14th Street, shown here.
