Breeches Buoy

The Life Line, by Winslow Homer, 1884, depicts a breeches buoy in use during a rescue operation. A breeches buoy was a crude rope-based rescue device used to rescue people from wrecked vessels, or to transfer people from one location to another in situations of danger. The breeches buoy was usually deployed from either ship to ship or ship to shore; it was very similar to a zip line.
