The Hatching Cat of Gotham

In September 1918, by orders of the United States War Department, Brooklyn’s Polytechnic Institute, seen here, was briefly transformed into barracks as part of the Students Army Training Corps. The site of the old municipal building and Murphy Park was turned into an exercise and drill ground. In addition to receiving a monthly salary, students in the Corps also had their tuition paid for by the government. Photo: Brooklyn Public Library
