Joralemon-Battery Tunnel

The Joralemon Street Tunnel, 1.2 miles long and comprising two cast-iron tubes, was opened for public transit on January 9, 1908. As the first tunnel to span the East River, it was quite an impressive feat of engineering — it even warranted its own postcard. The tunnel currently services the 4 and 5 trains connecting the southern tip of Manhattan to Brooklyn.
