Chickering Hall was built in 1924, just four years after a fatal fire destroyed two joined houses on the site and killed five people, including the famous animal trainer, Dr. Martin Potter. In its early years, the building was home to the American Piano Company and a variety of other tenants. By the time the peacock paid a visit, the building was being leased by The Curtiss Flying Service.
