1893: The Tombs’ Black Cat That Befriended Prisoners on Murderers’ Row » The Rotunda
On the site of the Court of General Sessions at 23 Chambers Street — where Carlyle Harris’ trial took place — was once a circular building known as The Rotunda. This unique building was constructed around 1820 and used for the exhibition of large panoramic paintings, statuary, and other displays. The Common Council leased the Rotunda to artist John Vanderlyn for a period of ten years, with the condition that the building become the property of the city at the termination of the grant.
