1853 Map of New York Farms

Almy Goelet’s father, Thomas Buchanan, was a Scotch farmer who cultivated turnips, corn, and potatoes on 13 acres of land surrounding 45th Street and Third Avenue in what was then Manhattan’s northern wilderness. It was from this property that the Goelet family obtained much of its wealth. The Buchanan Farm is #120 on this old farm map from 1852; to the east is the Casper Smith estate (#121) and Turtle Bay Farm (#122).
