190th Street Bronx

Known as Croton Avenue when it was opened from University Avenue to Jerome Avenue, and then later as Pipe Street, the entire stretch of present-day 190th Street (east and west) was renamed St. James Street in 1884 at the request of Frederick Devoe and other landowners. The name paid homage to the Protestant Episcopal church, which was built in 1864 on an acre of the former Valentine farm. St. James Street, pictured here in 1890, was a narrow rural lane with a small pond alongside it. Museum of the City of New York Collection
