In 1895, Brian Hughes entered a 10-cent street cat he named Nicodemus in the very first National Cat Show at Madison Square Garden. On May 5, 1895, the Chicago Tribune reported that the cat looked like “the ordinary backyard, high-fence cat that gets itself shot at moonlight nights.”
