The Case summer home – formerly the Backus cottage — was located just north of the old Hawthorne Manor, which was the former home of Julian Hawthorne, the son of author Nathanial Hawthorne. The manor comprised 107 acres and more than a mile of frontage of Shelter Island Sound. The land was purchased by the Conservative Land Associates in 1925, which planned to subdivide the lot for “high-class small homes.”—NYT, November 18, 1925
