John Y. McKane

Gravesend Town Supervisor and Sunday school teacher John McKane created the Coney Island police force in 1881 and appointed himself the chief. Many of the “policemen” that McKane commanded from his shack on the sand dunes were ex-cons who oftentimes robbed the people looking for their help.
