Garbage scow

During the busiest seasons in the early 1900s, seven or eight garbage scows, each carrying refuse totaling between 500 and 1,000 tons, would arrive daily at Barren Island. The horse boat also arrived daily, carting as many as 50 dead horses in addition to cows, cats, and dogs.
