The children were all at school — Public School #120 — when the hog hunt took place. In the early 20th century, P.S. 120 had about four teachers who would arrive by boat (a police launch in the early days, later by passenger ferry) on Sunday and spend the week in a house next to the school before heading back to their homes on Friday.
