Barren Island shack

In 1880, Barren Island’s 309 residents were mostly single men living in 12 residences, including factory dormitories, barracks or congregate company housing. By 1900, at which time the population was 520, many of the 103 households of parents, children, and boarders were living in clapboard shacks like this one.
