The Mollers, a large German family, were among the most popular sugar refiners during the decade that included the Civil War. William Moller had been in partnership with sugar moguls W. & F. Havemeyer before forming William Moller & Son’s Sugar Refinery. By 1865, the firm was producing 17 million pounds of sugar a year, valued at $2.8 million.
