Caption: Perhaps it was a good thing that there were so many cats at Bellevue Hospital. In early years, the hospital was overrun with hundreds of rats–in fact, in 1860 a newborn infant was reportedly gnawed to death by rats–so the cats probably performed a great service by keeping the vermin population down.
