Smit's Vly

In Dutch New York, a large tract of land along the East River north of Wall Street was called Smit’s Vly, for “blacksmith’s valley” (T. Smit had a forge in this area, near the ferry that went to Long Island). This illustration show Smit’s Vly on the East River at the foot of Maiden Lane. Museum of the City of New York Collections
