1891: Old Tom Cat, the Brazen Pampered Pet of New York City Hall » Col. Ellsworth

Col. Elmer E. Ellsworth, 1861

In April 1861, President Abraham Lincoln called for 75,000 Union troops. Col. Elmer Ephraim Ellsworth responded by recruiting soldiers — the “Fire Zouaves” from New York City’s volunteer firefighting companies. Ironically, following his death by shotgun blast a month later, his body lay in state in New York City Hall, where thousands of Union supporters came to pay their respects. Currier & Ives, 1861.
